After your vasectomy

What to expect and how to care for yourself

Your Aussie Vasectomy Care Recovery Pack

Every patient receives a complimentary Aussie Vasectomy Care Recovery Pack, carefully designed to support a comfortable recovery.

Our reusable CoolSack™ was personally designed by Dr Marcel after performing thousands of vasectomies. Its size, shape, weight, gel consistency and soft fabric edge were all chosen to provide effective cooling while remaining comfortable to use.

The Frost Buffer™ slips over the CoolSack to help protect your skin from direct contact with the ice pack, providing a soft and safe icing experience.

You’ll also receive easy-to-follow printed aftercare instructions, along with a small treat for the trip home.

Rest & Recovery

Go home and rest for the remainder of the day

• Most men feel back to normal within about 7 days (sometimes up to 2 weeks)

• Some mild discomfort in the testicles or lower abdomen is normal

Wound Care

• A waterproof dressing will be applied to the small opening/s on the scrotum. Try to keep it on for about 5 days but if it falls off, replace with a normal band-aid

• A small amount of blood on the dressing is normal

• You can shower daily but avoid baths and swimming for 5 days

Ice pack and pain relief

Applying ice during the first 48 hours is one of the best ways to reduce swelling and discomfort after your vasectomy.

Please use the CoolSack supplied in your Recovery Pack together with the Frost Buffer pouch for the for the first 1-2 days. Apply for 20 minutes every 1–3 hours but if you are out and about just ice it whenever you can.

Take regular Paracetamol and Nurofen (2 tablets of each at the same time, 3 times daily) for 3 days, then only as needed after that.

Wear supportive underwear for the first week as gravity and movement can increase pain and swelling

Activity Restrictions

• Avoid long walks and prolonged standing for the first few days

• Avoid strenuous activity, heavy lifting and sex for the first week

• There is no specific weight limit but you just need to avoid straining (ie lifting a bag of groceries is fine and it’s ok to carry a small child with caution)

• If you are feeling good after 7 days you can gradually resume light exercise, jogging, lifting and sex

• Martial arts, contact sports and bike riding need to be avoided for 3 weeks

What’s Normal

• Mild swelling or bruising

• Black/blue discoloration of the scrotum (sometimes extending to the penis)

• A small amount of blood in your semen early on

These will settle over 1–2 weeks
